Dear Parishioners,

This report includes financial information for the first half of Fiscal Year 20242025, the six months ending December 31, 2024.

Church - Offertory revenue came in at 94% of budget. This was largely due to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which resulted in low Mass attendance in the weeks following the storm. This was offset, however, by increased participation in the Faith Formation Programs and increased votive offerings. Also, interest income from Parish savings accounts was greater than expected. Expenses came in close to budget at 101%.

School - Tuition and other revenues came in at 94% of budget due to the loss of revenue from the cancelled Fall Festival that was to take place on the same weekend that Hurricane Helene hit. School expenses were held to a minimum which resulted in expenses coming in at 89% of budget.

Capital Improvements - Major capital improvements, such as replacement of roofs and HVAC units, are funded largely by donations to the monthly yellow envelope collection. These contributions continue to be strong at 110% of budget. During the first half of the fiscal year, a large component of the church HVAC system was replaced. In addition, roof repairs were conducted for the Immaculata School main building, gym and STEM Lab, and Building 727 that houses the Good Samaritan Attic and Hurricane Helene Relief efforts. For a complete list of the Capital Improvement Projects conducted during this period, please see the Capital Activity section of this report. These major capital improvements could not have been done without the generosity of our parishioners. We sincerely thank you for your stewardship in helping to upgrade our parish and school and maintain our facilities.

DSA - By year end, contributions to the 2024 Diocesan Support Appeal (DSA) were at 78% of our goal. Our goal was $143,013 and 267 Immaculate Conception parishioners contributed $115,988. Despite many generous parishioners, we fell short of our goal by $27,025.

We are grateful for the gifts God has given us and will continue to use these gifts to do His will.

In the wake of the news of Pope Francis’s death early Easter Monday morning, April 21, dealing a blow to Catholic faithful all over the world, Bishop Michael Martin called for all parishes in the Diocese of Charlotte to hold a special prayer service or Holy Hour to pray for the repose of the Pope’s soul. 

With only a few hours’ notice, about 200 faithful of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hendersonville came together Monday night to heed the Bishop’s call, taking part in a guided Holy Hour of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and the Liturgy of the Word. An image of Pope Francis was also placed on the altar as people prayed, thanking God for this servant of His who led the Catholic Church for 12 years. 

Fr. Andres Gutierrez, pastor at Immaculate Conception, said this time is particularly meaningful to him for several reasons. He was studying in Rome, at the Vatican, when Pope Francis was elected in 2013. He said he remembers seeing the white smoke go up that day, then jumping in the car to drive straight to St. Peter’s Square to hear the joyful announcement. 

Fr. Andres, who is Colombian, also pointed out that Pope Francis was the first Pope from South America, and he canonized the first Colombian saint — Laura Montoya or Laura of Saint Catherine of Siena. She was a nun who dedicated 30 years of her life helping indigenous peoples in her native  Antioquia region.

“As a priest,” Fr. Andres said, “it is so meaningful and consoling to witness the genuine and loving concern of the faithful for the Catholic Church, on this occasion as so many came together to pray for the eternal repose of the Pope Francis, as he passed to the Father’s House.”

A raíz de la noticia de la muerte del Papa Francisco en la madrugada del lunes de Pascua, 21 de abril, que asestó un duro golpe a los fieles católicos de todo el mundo, el obispo Michael Martin hizo un llamamiento a todas las parroquias de la diócesis de Charlotte para celebrar un servicio especial de oración u Hora Santa para rezar por el descanso del alma del Papa.

April 18, 2025 -- 

As Divine Mercy Sunday (Second Sunday of Easter) falls on April 27 this year, the Divine Mercy Novena will begin on Good Friday. Parishioners will lead the chaplet at the church each of the nine days, beginning on April 18. See below for that schedule. 

Then, on Divine Mercy Sunday, join parishioners in the Main Church at 3:30 p.m. to sing the Chaplet in English and in Spanish, with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Adoration and Benediction. Prayer cards will be provided.

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy can be said anytime, but our Lord Jesus specifically asked St. Faustina that it be recited as a novena. He promised, "By this Novena (of Chaplets), I will grant every possible grace to souls."

For each of the nine days, our Lord gave Saint Faustina a different intention:

Day 1) All mankind, especially sinners
Day 2) The souls of priests and religious
Day 3) All devout and faithful souls
Day 4) Those who do not believe in God and those who do not yet know Jesus
Day 5) The souls who have separated themselves from the Church
Day 6) The meek and humble souls and the souls of little children
Day 7) The souls who especially venerate and glorify His mercy
Day 8) The souls detained in purgatory
Day 9) Souls who have become lukewarm

At Immaculate Conception, it will be prayed each of the 9 days at the church at these times:

April 18 (Good Friday): 3 p.m. & 4:45 p.m.

April 19 (Holy Saturday): After the 8:30 a.m. Rosary, all bilingual. 

April 20 (Easter Sunday): 15 minutes before each Mass, including in Spanish before the 1:45 p.m. Mass.

April 21-22: After the 12:10 p.m. Mass.

April 23: After the 9 a.m. & 6:30 p.m. Masses.

Holy Week this year begins on Sunday, April 13, with Palm Sunday. The entire week at Immaculate Conception is filled with changes in the normal schedule, particularly with added Confessions on Monday and Tuesday, April 14-15. 

Holy Tuesday: Due to the Chrism Mass for the entire Diocese of Charlotte falling on Tuesday, April 15, there will be no 12:10 p.m. Mass that day; instead, Mass will be at 6:30 p.m., preceded by Confessions at 5:30 p.m. 

Holy Wednesday: Mass will be at 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. as usual, with Confessions at 5:30 p.m. 

Holy Thursday: As it is every year, the only Mass celebrated on Holy Thursday is the Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be bilingual. 

Good Friday: The day we solemnly observe the Lord's Passion and Death. There are no Masses anywhere in the world on this day. At Immaculate Conception, there will be:
Stations of the Cross in Spanish at 9 a.m.; Stations of the Cross in English at 12 p.m.; Novena of the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be prayed at 3 p.m. (bilingual); Liturgy of the Passion of the Lord at 5 p.m. (bilingual).

Holy Saturday: The Holy Rosary and Novena of the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be prayed (bilingual) beginning at 8:30 a.m. and Confessions will be heard.
Easter Vigil (Saturday night): Solemn Easter Vigil Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord (bilingual) at 9 p.m. 

Easter Sunday: The Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. All Masses today will follow a normal schedule (8 a.m., 10 a.m., 12 p.m. in English and 1:45 p.m. in Spanish).

All parishioners of Immaculate Conception, now is the time to take part in a very important survey that will be instrumental in helping our parish continue to thrive as we continue to grow! It launched Saturday, March 8! In order to best assess our parish’s unique range of parishioners, as well as our strengths, challenges and opportunities for growth, the Diocese of Charlotte is rolling out an incredible tool for Bishop Michael Martin to better understand each of the unique parishes in the diocese — and for each parish to be able to better identify and address its own strengths and challenges.

The first step in this process is the Disciple Maker Index (DMI) survey! The DMI is an important survey tool that invites you to reflect on your faith and discipleship journey here.

The Disciple Maker Index is designed to:

• Invite parishioners to reflect on their journey of discipleship.
• Enable parish leadership to make data-driven decisions. 
• Help parishioners grow in their faith.

"Stations & Soup":

All parishioners of Immaculate Conception are invited to join each Friday during Lent as different groups of the parish and school will host “Stations and Soup,” in an effort to gather the faithful to offer up part of their Fridays during these 40 days to pray the Stations of the Cross, followed by a simple dinner meal of soup in observance of abstaining from meat on Fridays. Join our parish community each Friday beginning through April 11 to take part in this “mini pilgrimage” of meditating on the agony, both physical and psychological, that Jesus Christ endured in his Passion for all of humanity leading up to His death on the Cross. Stations will begin at 5 p.m. each Friday in the main church, followed by potluck soup dinner in the St. Francis Room. Those who also stay for Mass at 6:30 p.m. will have enough time to finish eating to maintain the 1-hour fast before receiving Holy Communion.

Mass at 6:30 p.m. on Fridays is in Spanish, except for the First Friday of the month, which is bilingual (March 7 and April 4).

Todos los feligreses de la Inmaculada Concepción están invitados a unirse cada viernes de Cuaresma a los diferentes grupos de la parroquia y la escuela que organizarán "Estaciones y Sopa", en un esfuerzo por reunir a los fieles para ofrecer parte de sus viernes durante estos 40 días para rezar las Estaciones de la Cruz, seguido de una sencilla cena de sopa en observancia de la abstinencia de carne los viernes. Únase a nuestra comunidad parroquial cada viernes a partir del 11 de abril para participar en esta "mini peregrinación" de meditación sobre la agonía, tanto física como psicológica, que Jesucristo soportó en su Pasión por toda la humanidad hasta su muerte en la Cruz. Las estaciones comenzarán a las 5 p.m. cada viernes en la iglesia principal, seguidas de una cena de sopa en la Sala de San Francisco. At the start of 2024, Fr. Andres announced the gift to the parish was More Jesus, which translated to more Masses being added to the schedule throughout the week, along with more opportunities for Confession (even during Mass), and more Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. 

"We added more Mass times, more Confession times and more Adoration times -- and the fruits have been absolutely astounding because with more Jesus, everything is better," Fr. Andres said near the end of the 10 a.m. Mass on Jan. 19. "So, this year, we're going to give you another gift. This is the year that the Pope has proclaimed as the Jubilee Year of Hope, so our gift to you for this Jubilar Year is 'More Hope.'" 

In this Year of the Jubilee, which only happens every 25 years in the Catholic Church, Pope Francis has declared the theme to be "Pilgrims of Hope," calling all Catholics to renew ourselves as Pilgrims of Hope. Hope is a virtue that “does not deceive or disappoint because it is grounded in the certainty that nothing and no one may ever separate us from God’s love,” the Pontiff said in his “papal bull” proclamation of the Holy Year. 

Continuing with that theme, Fr. Andres expanded on what this year's gift to the parish of "More Hope" would look like. 

"There are a few instances of what that's going to look like and how that's going to change us here at the parish for this year," he said. "So, it's sort of a gift and a commitment on us to you -- and also to you, to get more involved and to be more active in the parish and its ministries."

En Español: El P. Andrés anuncia el regalo de 2025 a la parroquia: Esperanza

Durante las misas del fin de semana del 18 y 19 de enero, el P. Andrés Gutiérrez, párroco, y el P. David O'Connor, vicario parroquial, anunciaron su regalo y el regalo de la iglesia a los feligreses de la Inmaculada Concepción para 2025: Más ESPERANZA.

"Hay algunos ejemplos de cómo va a ser y cómo nos va a cambiar aquí en la parroquia este año", dijo. "Por lo tanto, es una especie de regalo y un compromiso de nosotros a usted - y también a usted, a participar más y ser más activos en la parroquia y sus ministerios".

¿Cómo nos cambiará la ESPERANZA este Año Jubilar 2025?

2025 Marks the 100th anniversary of the Five First Saturdays Devotion.

Purpose: To make reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

How to fulfill the First Saturdays Devotion:

Confession: Make a good confession within 8 days (before or after the Saturday) and be in a state of grace in order to be able to receive the Eucharist. This confession should be made in reparation to Mary’s Immaculate Heart.

Holy Communion: Receive the Eucharist on five consecutive First Saturdays of the month, which is the central act of reparation in the First Saturday Devotion.

Rosary: Pray the 5 decades of the Holy Rosary with the intention of reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Meditation: Complete a 15-minute meditation embracing and focusing on one of the Rosary’s mysteries, keeping Jesus and Mary company while meditating.

Promise: Our Lady’s promise made to those who faithfully fulfill this devotion: “I promise to assist at the hour of death with the graces necessary for salvation,” meaning that our Blessed Mother will be present at the hour of death with the grace of final perseverance,  the most important grace after the utmost grace and gift of Faith.

Background:

On Dec. 10, 1925, Our Blessed Mother, Mary, appeared with the Child Jesus to Sister Lucia in Pontevedra, Spain, where Lucia was learning to read and write at the convent of the Dorothean Sisters. This apparition followed the 1917 apparitions to the three shepherd children in Fatima, of which Sister Lucia was one.
During the 1925 apparition, the Child Jesus said to Lucia, “Have compassion on the Heart of your most holy Mother, covered with thorns, with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment, and there is no one to make an act of reparation to remove them.”
Then, the Blessed Mother spoke, saying:
“Look, my daughter, at my Heart, surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce me every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You, at least, try to console me and say that I promise to assist at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for 15 minutes while meditating on the 15 mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me.”

In 1930, the Lord Jesus, in a vision to Lucia, gave the reasoning behind the number “five” in the Five Saturdays Devotion:

1. Blasphemies against the Immaculate Conception
2. Blasphemies against her virginity
3. Blasphemies against her divine maternity, at the same time the refusal to accept her as the Mother of all men
4. Instilling indifference, scorn and even hatred towards this Immaculate Mother in the hearts of children
5. Direct insults against Her sacred images

Antecedentes:

En 1930, el Señor Jesús, en una visión a Lucía, dio el razonamiento detrás del número "cinco" en la Devoción de los Cinco Sábados:

1. Blasfemias contra la Inmaculada Concepción
2. Blasfemias contra su virginidad
3. Blasfemias contra su maternidad divina, al mismo tiempo que la negativa a aceptarla como Madre de todos los hombres
4. Inculcar en el corazón de los niños la indiferencia, el desprecio e incluso el odio hacia esta Madre Inmaculada
5. Insultos directos contra sus imágenes sagradas

Overnight Adoration of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament has begun at Immaculate Conception.

Last year, Fr. Andres Gutierrez announced that the priests' gift to the parish for the New Year was "more Jesus!" which meant more access to Sacraments in 2024 -- more availability with Mass, Confession and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. 

Since that time, in seeing the response of the faithful to seeking time with the Lord in daily Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Fr. Andres said the natural next step was to work towards offering the opportunity for parishioners to spend time in prayer and silence with Jesus into the late nighttime and early morning hours. 

Thus, overnight Adoration came to fruition on Dec. 13, 2024, at nearly the 1-year mark of daily Adoration being offered at Immaculate Conception. 

"It flowed naturally from the impressive and generous response we’ve been getting for the daily Adoration and from the request of some who were not able to make it during the day," Fr. Andres explained. "Having a once-a-week overnight adoration is a great opportunity to allow new adorers to encounter Jesus in the silence and serenity of night adoration." 

For many weeks, the Eucharistic Adoration Ministry, affectionately also called the "Adorers," worked to get other adorers signed up to fill each hour timeslot. In Matthew 26:38 and 26:40, Jesus says to His disciples before He withdraws to pray, "Remain here and keep watch with Me.”

Upon returning from praying and finding them asleep, He asks His disciples, "Could you not keep watch with Me for one hour?" as He spent time praying in the Garden before He was to undergo the ultimate sacrifice of His crucifixion and death. 

The parish's Eucharistic Adoration Ministry did, indeed, find adorers to wait, to keep watch, to be present with Our Lord in Adoration, for each hour through the night Friday evening into Saturday morning each week at the Chapel in the bottom of the main church building. 

"The goal is always a more personal and loving encounter with Christ, as He continues to show us His nearness in our daily lives," Fr. Andres said. "The sacrifice that certain night time slots may imply, are also a generous offering to the Lord who will recompense abundantly with His mercy and grace."

Overnight Adoration is for scheduled adorers only, but anyone who is interested in making the sacrifice to be with Jesus, to spend that time with Him without outside distractions even at hours of the night and morning that might be a sacrifice, can reach out to get more information about timeslots and the process. La adoración nocturna de Nuestro Señor en el Santísimo Sacramento ha comenzado en la Inmaculada Concepción.

El año pasado, el P. Andrés Gutiérrez anunció que el regalo de los sacerdotes a la parroquia para el Año Nuevo era «¡más Jesús!», lo que significaba más acceso a los Sacramentos en 2024 - más disponibilidad con la Misa, la Confesión y la Adoración del Santísimo Sacramento.

Desde entonces, al ver la respuesta de los fieles a la búsqueda de tiempo con el Señor en la Adoración diaria del Santísimo Sacramento, el P. Andrés. "Tener una adoración nocturna una vez a la semana es una gran oportunidad para permitir a los nuevos adoradores encontrarse con Jesús en el silencio y la serenidad de la adoración nocturna".

Durante muchas semanas, el Ministerio de Adoración Eucarística, también llamado cariñosamente los «Adoradores», trabajó para conseguir que otros adoradores se apuntaran para llenar cada franja horaria. En Mateo 26:38 y 26:40, Jesús dice a sus discípulos antes de retirarse a orar: "Quedaos aquí y velad conmigo".

El Ministerio de Adoración Eucarística de la parroquia encontró, efectivamente, adoradores para esperar, para velar, para estar presentes con Nuestro Señor en Adoración, durante cada hora de la noche del viernes al sábado por la mañana cada semana en la Capilla en la parte inferior del edificio principal de la iglesia.

Dec. 13, 2024 --

A group of Immaculate Conception parishioners, led by Fr. Nohe Torres, gathered outside the Chapel Thursday evening, Dec. 12, to process with a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe on her Feast day, before celebrating Mass. 

As they walked, they prayed the Rosary, and when they arrived to the back of the main church, they sang to Our Lady before taking their seats. 

Flowers, small images and statues, along with Rosaries, were laid at the feet of the church's large statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe to honor her.

Un grupo de feligreses de la Inmaculada Concepción, encabezados por el P. Nohe Torres, se reunieron fuera de la Capilla el jueves 12 de diciembre por la tarde para procesionar con una estatua de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en el día de su Fiesta, antes de celebrar la Misa.

Mientras caminaban, rezaron el Rosario, y cuando llegaron a la parte posterior de la iglesia principal, cantaron a Nuestra Señora antes de tomar asiento.

Knights of Columbus and Pastor Fr. Andres Gutierrez led Immaculata Catholic School students and staff in a short procession Monday morning, Dec. 9, to honor the Immaculate Conception on her Solemnity prior to Mass. Students carried the decorated statue of Our Lady from the school to the altar inside the church, and behind, the entire student body quietly followed.

“If you look carefully, in every image of the Immaculate Conception, she – Our Lady, Mary – is stomping her foot on a snake, and this snake has an apple in its mouth," Fr. Andres said during his homily to the students and those present at Mass on Monday.

"There is so much symbolism here: Our Lady triumphs, Our Lady wins, Our Lady is victorious over evil, over temptation, over the devil, over everything that is bad – because she has nothing to do with sin. God said to Satan in the Garden of Eden, ‘I will put enmity between you and the woman.’ Our Lady is God’s perfect creation.”

Then, Father read from the writings of an early Bishop and Doctor of the Church, St. Anselm of Canterbury. “God is the Father of the created world; Mary is the Mother of the re-created world. God is the Father by whom all things were given life, and Mary, the Mother through whom all things were given new life.”

A group of students, who with their parents, walked through a 30-day Consecration to Jesus through Mary, completed their consecration on this Solemnity. During the month-long consecration, there were nightly readings and weekly meetings on Fridays to discuss the readings from that week. They processed in behind Our Lady at Monday’s Mass and laid flowers at the foot of her statue.

"Dios dijo a Satanás en el Jardín del Edén: 'Pondré enemistad entre ti y la mujer'. La Virgen es la creación perfecta de Dios".

A continuación, el Padre leyó los escritos de un antiguo Obispo y Doctor de la Iglesia, San Anselmo de Canterbury. "Dios es el Padre del mundo creado; María es la Madre del mundo recreado. Dios es el Padre por quien todas las cosas recibieron vida, y María, la Madre por quien todas las cosas recibieron nueva vida".

Immaculata Catholic School will host a “Christmas Store” for one weekend only (Dec. 14-15) for families needing help purchasing gifts after Hurricane Helene. 

“We realize that Christmas will be a difficult time for many of our families,” said ICS principal Margaret Beale. “We have decided to open a Christmas Store at Immaculata Catholic School for families in need. Parents are welcome to come to our Christmas Store and get some gifts for their children at no cost. Christmas decorations will also be available for families who lost theirs during the storm.” 

Day 1 will be for Immaculata parents/families, after which the store will be opened up to the public on Day 2.

The process of repairing and rebuilding homes and whole communities continues across pockets of Henderson County and beyond following flooding from Hurricane Helene. A strong connection by a current Immaculate Conception parishioner to one particular mobile home park in Swannanoa translated to a small group from IC making a trip there on Saturday, Nov. 9.

Fr. Andrés Gutiérrez, with Br. Alfelix Peralta, some young adults, parishioners and children made the drive to the group of homes that sits very close to Swannanoa River and saw widespread flooding on Sept. 27. About 35 of the homes were severely damaged by the flooding, forcing families to be displaced either to surrounding areas or “tiny homes,” campers and even tents on their own property while their homes are repaired.

Several volunteer organizations came together – many from out of town – on Nov. 9 to organize a family fun day for the families at the mobile home park, offering the residents a few hours of relief through a warm meal (of authentic tacos!), free supplies, fellowship and fun for the kids – including a bounce house, endless games of soccer, face painting, free toys, live music and more.

Even Fr. Peter Ireorji, the new parochial administrator of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Swannanoa, joined in on the fun, taking part in the soccer competition alongside men, women and children of all ages under a sunny sky. Some of the children even called him “Pelé,” (after soccer legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento) as they were so impressed by his skill!

The day offered families a sense of normalcy and reprieve as much of their time in the past weeks since Helene has been spent working alongside volunteer crews to restore their homes, from the wiring to the insulation, walls and flooring. 

“This amazing opportunity to visit this community in Swannanoa has been an eye-opening experience," said Fr. Andrés. "The Lord calls us to go out and bring His tenderness, His smile, His caring hands to those who need it.  I can’t think of another place that needs this more than these communities, so devastated by Helene.  Incidentally, it also filled us who went, with joy and peace.”

El proceso de reparación y reconstrucción de viviendas y comunidades enteras continúa en algunas zonas del condado de Henderson y más allá tras las inundaciones provocadas por el huracán Helene. La fuerte conexión de un feligrés de la Inmaculada Concepción con un parque de casas móviles en Swannanoa hizo que un pequeño grupo de la IC viajara allí el sábado 9 de noviembre.

El P. Andrés Gutiérrez, con el Hno. Alfelix Peralta, algunos jóvenes adultos, feligreses y niños hicieron el viaje hasta el grupo de casas que se encuentra muy cerca del río Swannanoa y que sufrió una inundación generalizada el 27 de septiembre. Alrededor de 35 de las casas resultaron gravemente dañadas por la inundación, lo que obligó a las familias a desplazarse a zonas circundantes o a "casas pequeñas," caravanas e incluso tiendas de campaña en su propia propiedad mientras se reparan sus casas.

Varias organizaciones de voluntarios se unieron -muchas de fuera de la ciudad- el 9 de noviembre para organizar un día de diversión familiar para las familias del parque de casas móviles, ofreciendo unas horas de alivio a través de una comida caliente (¡a base de auténticos tacos!), suministros gratuitos, compañerismo y diversión para los niños -incluyendo un castillo hinchable, interminables partidos de fútbol, pintura de caras, juguetes gratis, música en directo y mucho más. 

Incluso el padre Peter Ireorji, nuevo administrador parroquial de la iglesia católica St. Margaret Mary de Swannanoa, se unió a la diversión, participando en la competición de fútbol junto a hombres, mujeres y niños de todas las edades bajo un cielo soleado. Algunos de los niños incluso le llamaron "Pelé" (por la leyenda del fútbol Edson Arantes do Nascimento), ¡por lo impresionados que estaban por su habilidad!

El día ofreció a las familias una sensación de normalidad y descanso, ya que desde la llegada de Helene han pasado gran parte de su tiempo trabajando con equipos de voluntarios para restaurar sus casas, desde el cableado hasta el aislamiento, las paredes y el suelo. 

"Esta increíble oportunidad de visitar esta comunidad en Swannanoa ha sido una experiencia reveladora", dijo el P. Andrés. "El Señor nos llama a salir y llevar Su ternura, Su sonrisa, Sus manos cuidadosas a aquellos que lo necesitan.  No se me ocurre otro lugar que lo necesite más que estas comunidades, tan devastadas por Helene.  Por cierto, también nos llenó de alegría y paz a los que fuimos".

When it became known that local retired diocesan priest Fr. John Pagel needed help cleaning up his yard and outside area at his Henderson County home following Hurricane Helene, a few young adults sprang into action to meet that need.

A group of Immaculate Conception young adults, together with Pastor Fr. Andres Gutierrez and Faith Formation Director Mike Avery, gathered supplies and went to Fr. Pagel’s home on Oct. 22. They worked to clear large fallen branches and debris on his property and raked and swept the fallen leaves from his porch and walkways, better ensuring the outside space was safe.  

The group also checked for any damage to his windows and cleaned them, and they cleaned out Fr. Pagel’s gutters while they were there.

Aliza Avery, at just three years old, was also on-site to make sure everyone was working efficiently and joyfully – which they did!

“I was delighted to witness the joy and energy of the young adults while carrying out this service for Fr. Pagel,” Fr. Andres said. “This great experience confirms the truth that serving others – giving of ourselves – brings satisfaction and peace.”

Fr. Pagel, who has often celebrated Mass at Immaculate Conception over the years and helps with hearing confessions, expressed his sincere gratitude for the helping hands and the chance to visit with some of the younger generation of the parish.

Parishioners of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church had the privilege and blessing of taking part Tuesday night, Nov. 5, in the Guadalupe Torch Run (Carrera de la Antorcha Guadalupana), an annual pilgrimage that runs through five Mexican states and 14 American states over about three months. 

It marked the first time this pilgrimage has come through Hendersonville in its 26-year history. Each fall since 1998, it begins at the National Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, where the torch (La Antorcha) is lit.

During the pilgrimage, images of La Virgen de Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego are carried to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe and show devotion to her, as she is the Patron Saint of Mexico.  

Thousands of runners take part each year, carrying the torch and making stops along the route for prayer and Masses. The journey is a message of faith, peace and justice, and it seeks to unite immigrants in the U.S. to Our Lady and the National Basilica of our Lady of Guadalupe. 

On Tuesday, nearly 100 runners carried the torch for 56 miles along U.S. Highway 25 from St. Mary Magdalene parish in Simpsonville, S.C., to Hendersonville.

Following a procession by the Catholic faithful, Fr. Nohe Torres celebrated Mass. 

“We need peace and justice," he said (translated from Spanish to English). "Let us receive Our Lady, St. Juan Diego, and the light of the Lord."

"What must we do? Pray and entrust ourselves to the Virgin. May she increase our faith,” Fr. Torres continued.

The very same flame that was lit in Mexico City on Aug. 30 held steady overnight Tuesday as the flame of the Pastoral Candle in the sanctuary of Immaculate Conception, joined by the two large images of Our Lady and St. Juan Diego.  

After a blessing by Fr. Andres Gutierrez Wednesday morning, the group making the pilgrimage set out for Asheville, to the Basilica of St. Lawrence, then to Our Lady of the Rosary in Newton. They will continue to several more churches in the Diocese of Charlotte until Nov. 10, before continuing on, ultimately, to New York, where la Antorcha will arrive on Dec. 12, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Los feligreses de la Iglesia Católica de la Inmaculada Concepción tuvieron el privilegio y la bendición de participar el martes 5 de noviembre por la noche en la Carrera de la Antorcha Guadalupana, una peregrinación anual que recorre cinco estados mexicanos y 14 estados americanos durante unos tres meses.

Es la primera vez que esta peregrinación pasa por Hendersonville en sus 26 años de historia. Cada otoño desde 1998, comienza en la Basílica Nacional de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en Ciudad de México, donde se enciende la antorcha.

Durante la peregrinación, se llevan imágenes de la Virgen de Guadalupe y de San Juan Diego para honrar a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y mostrarle devoción, ya que es la Patrona de México.

Miles de corredores participan cada año, portando la antorcha y haciendo paradas a lo largo del recorrido para rezar y celebrar misas. El recorrido es un mensaje de fe, paz y justicia, y busca unir a los inmigrantes en Estados Unidos con Nuestra Señora y la Basílica Nacional de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.

Tras una procesión de fieles católicos, el P. Nohe Torres celebró la misa. 

"Necesitamos paz y justicia," dijo. "Recibamos a Nuestra Señora, a San Juan Diego y la luz del Señor…Ustedes y yo estamos necesitados de consuelo. ¿Qué nos toca hacer? Rezar y encomendarnos a la Virgen. Que ella aumente nuestra fe." 

La misma llama que se encendió en la Ciudad de México el 30 de agosto se mantuvo firme durante la noche como la llama del Cirio Pastoral en el santuario de la Inmaculada Concepción, junto con las dos grandes imágenes de Nuestra Señora y San Juan Diego.

Tras la bendición del P. Andrés el miércoles por la mañana, el grupo que peregrinaba se dirigió a Asheville, a la Basílica de San Lorenzo, y después a Nuestra Señora del Rosario en Newton.

Seguirán por varias iglesias más de la diócesis de Charlotte hasta el 10 de noviembre, antes de continuar, en última instancia, hacia Nueva York, donde la Antorcha llegará el 12 de diciembre, festividad de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.
